The garbage and recycling system for greater Portland is facing significant impacts from the recent surge in COVID-19 cases and winter weather.
There may be delays in getting garbage and recycling picked up as many companies are prioritizing neighborhoods affected during the snowstorm. Call your hauler if your pickup has been missed or visit oregonmetro.gov/hauler for hauler contact information.
Metro is urging non-commercial customers to delay their visits to these transfer stations until further notice.

A huge thank you to Master Recycler Mentor Elizabeth Erickson (Class 52) who reported her 500th hour in December. Liz focuses on projects right in her own neighborhood and then shares lessons widely in networking groups around the City and State. I remember one really hot summer running into Liz at the Beaumont street fair after her class when she was single-handedly trying to change the fair from all garbage to a recycling culture. She was getting frustrating results as the operations manager threw the glass in the garbage right in front of her. Since then, she has focused on building up teams to make change. She has tirelessly led a green team at Alameda Elementary School for several years, using creative techniques in waste reduction - even their fundraising items were reusable ware. She joined the Eco-Schools Network and (pictured here) the Oregon Green Schools to learn and share. She also joined the Master Recycler Mentor team to help new Master Recyclers learn the ropes. Liz also writes a monthly article for her neighborhood newsletter on various topics. It is no wonder that the Solid Waste and Recycling team in Clark County snatched her up as an outreach coordinator.

Liz se enfoca en proyectos en su propio vecindario y luego comparte lecciones ampliamente en grupos de redes en la ciudad y el estado. Many thanks to Robin Carpenter (Class 69). Robin is always right in the thick of all events westside. With 3 PlanetCons, 2 James Recycling events, and 5 Repair Fairs, no one would dispute that Robin has earned her 100 hours badge. What may be less obvious is all her amazing work behind the scenes. Robin spent about 50 hours helping the Portland Audubon with their Silver Sustainability at Work Certification. She also joined the Master Recycler Mentor team this summer, just in time to welcome a new batch of westside Master Recyclers in Class 78. The greatest magic that Robin brings to the movement is that she is a Connector. She loves to sit down and understand a person's sustainability interests and connect them with just the right resources.

Two people completed their 30-hour commitment and became officially Certified Master Recyclers this month. A sincere thank you to each of you for your work in bringing important resources and information to your communities!
Dos personas lograron su compromiso de 30 horas y se convirtieron oficialmente en Expertas en Reciclaje Certificados este mes. ¡Un sincero agradecimiento a cada uno de ustedes por su trabajo en traer importantes recursos e información a sus comunidades!
Sergio Garcia (clase 73) fue parte de la primera clase de español del Centro Cultural. Él y los otros promotores ambientales tenían tanto entusiasmo y energía después de la clase que crearon ráfaga de actividad. El Condado de Washington y Centro Cultural decidieron dedicar un puesto de personal para ayudar a este increíble equipo a alcanzar sus metas. Centro Cultural contrató a Sergio. Tuvimos mucha suerte de tenerlo a bordo cuando llegó COVID, ya que ha sido innovador (y obstinado) en la búsqueda de formas de mantener su sueño de conectarse con la comunidad latina en el condado de Washington. Claro, hacer de su trabajo el apoyo a los promotores ambientales hizo que fuera difícil encontrar tiempo para completar su propia Certificación. ¡Pero lo logró!
Sergio Garcia (Class 73) was part of the first Centro Cultural Spanish language class. He and the other Environmental Promoters had such enthusiasm and energy after the class, they created a flurry of activity. Washington County and Centro Cultural decided to dedicate a staff position to help this amazing team reach their goals. Centro Cultural hired Sergio. We were so lucky to have him on board when COVID hit as he has been innovative (and stubborn) in finding ways to keep their dream of connecting with the Latino community in Washington County. Of course, making it his job to support the Environmental Promoters made it hard to find time to complete his own Certification, but he made it!
Vikki Obuhanych is the first member of Class 78 to become Certified. She loves recycling and she loves animals. So, she combined them to complete her 30-hour commitment. Vikki helps Animal Aid PDX utilize the BottleDrop Give program to raise money for their Animal Aid Cares Fund which provides financial assistance for urgent medical care of animals. What a great way to double her impact!
