About Trash for Peace:

It is an exciting time for Trash for Peace as it embarks upon 12 years of growth and leadership in

the greater Portland Metro region. It has an annual operating budget of 5+ Million dollars

including three organizations that it fiscally sponsors, and is a known leader in driving equity

within the waste and recycling world. The mission of Trash for Peace (TfP) is to provide hands-on,

creative experiences to encourage resilient communities. Its vision is empowered, healthy

communities living in a world without waste. TfP implements two main programs: the Sustainability

Education Program (SEP), and the Environmental Promoter and Multifamily Outreach Program, through

which TfP directly engages hundreds of community members that self-identify as low-income and/or

BIPOC in education, training, and supportive employment, and diverts hundreds of pounds of trash

from the landfill.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the board of directors, the Executive Director oversees the strategic and operational

efficiencies of our programs and staff. This seasoned leader not only understands current trends in

waste prevention, recycling, sustainability, and workforce development, but also has experience in

developing and implementing a successful fundraising plan. They also have experience in hiring and

managing staff, as well as established relationships with local community groups. Above all, the

executive director is a highly empathetic and effective leader with clear communication skills and

decisiveness.

Objectives of this role

● Act as liaison and work closely with board directors and committees to assess and address

issues affecting the organization.

● Oversee daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction for program

strategies and efficiencies, compliance, and quality assurance.

● Identify and address staffing requirements for efficient operations, and maintain a strong

work culture that attracts and retains people while driving the organization’s mission.

● Increase awareness of the organization by being the main spokesperson and liaison with local

media.

● Develop an actionable plan for fundraising and managing monthly cash flow.

● Comply with all national and local regulations.

Responsibilities

● Developing and directing overall organizational strategy, including annual budget.

■ Create strategic plans for achieving goals and objectives set in collaboration with the board

of directors and management staff.

● Ensuring overall financial stability for the organization and all of its programs by:

■ Seeking out and negotiating contracts and supporting the implementation of funding strategy,

including pursuing grants, fundraising, cultivating individual donors, and hosting events.

■ Preparing comprehensive budgets and reporting on revenue and expenditure.

■ Overseeing financial accounts (weekly finance meetings).

● Meet annual fundraising goals, in partnership with the board of directors, by securing

financial support from foundations, corporations, individual donors, and government funding

sources.

● Work with staff and board on annual fundraising benefits and additional events, and oversee

all external communications, including website, marketing collateral, newsletters, and social

media.

■ Act as a liaison between the board and the staff, ensuring compliance with all IRS, Oregon

laws, ensuring all filings occur and insurance requirements are being met.

● Serve as the face of the organization and participate in external events to increase

visibility, credibility, and market brand, and develop strategic partnerships to further increase

community awareness and expand programs.

● Build and lead an effective team that’s dedicated to fulfilling the organization’s mission

through highly successful programs, community engagement, and fundraising.

● Coaching, supporting, and mentoring managers and directors and conducting performance reviews

for managers.

● Manage staff members and clients whose experiences, cultures, and languages reflect the

community served by the organization.

● Ensure staff and volunteers are following policies to maintain a healthy and safe service

program and to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

● Assisting with direct service when necessary and to ensure the work/programs are being

implemented appropriately.

● Work with HR, bookkeeping,and other administrative staff and contractors to ensure benefits

are meeting expectations.

Required skills and qualifications

● Seven or more years of experience in senior management, preferably with nonprofit

organizations.

● Strong experience in public relations, marketing, and fundraising.

● Knowledge of leadership and management principles for nonprofit organizations.

● Proven success working with a board of directors.

● Dynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of an organization.

Preferred skills and qualifications

● Bilingual in Spanish and English.

● Familiarity with East Multnomah County and/or the waste management and recycling systems in the

Portland Metro region.

● Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in nonprofit management or relevant field.

● Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills.
