Lori Gates (Class 63) reported more than 1000 hours!
Lori is a Master Recycler Mentor and part of the amazing organization Westside Planet Alliance. Lori organized a series of farmers' market tables at the Forest Grove & Hillsboro Farmers' market inviting fellow Master Recyclers to engage market goers on topics from repair, reuse, compost/wormbins, toxics, food waste and of course recycling. She is also one of the core volunteers who have run the Westside Planet Alliance's PlanetCon events which are a mixture of information fair, repair fair and recycling collection events. We so appreciate Lori's commitment to recycling and her efforts in helping fellow Master Recyclers get out and make a difference.

Lisa at the Fix-it Fair
Lisa Arceneaux (Class 76) reported her 100th hour last month making her a Centurion Master Recycler. She was invited to join the class hosted by the North by Northeast Community Health Center. She tells the story that she signed up right away because she had integrity with the coordinator there, but she had her doubts, thinking they might be out stomping around in the mud and worms making compost. Quickly Lisa identified with the importance of the educational element our Master Recycler community service that she was doing – perhaps because she is a former Principal. She helped the King School with their new cafeteria food scrap program and joined the City of Portland’s Fix-it Fair. She also worked with another member of her class to start a monthly article in their N and NE chapter of AARP. Lisa is currently working on a gardening project with 10 households that surround her home where she will integrate information about compost, recycling, sustainable food, pesticides free gardening.

Four people completed their 30-hour commitment and became officially Certified Master Recyclers this month. A sincere thank you to each of you for your work in bringing important resources and information to your communities!

Kaye Silver (Class 32) started out volunteering at the West Linn Old Time fair a few years back and then took a little break. When she joined back up again in 2019, she was determined to complete her Certification. She offered a presentation at the Canby Kiwanis Club (pictured) joined fellow Master Recyclers at the Oregon City Farmer's Market and Cracked Pot event. One Canby Kiwanis attendee said, "that was a very informative presenter." Then COVID happened. But that didn't stop Kaye from continuing to make a difference. As soon as Clackamas County identified some modified ways she could still help, she jumped at the chance. She helped Clackamas County with contactless recycling outreach in multifamily communities in Wilsonville and she spent several days helping with food box delivery for the Lake Oswego Hunger Fighters.
Kaye Silver (Clase 32) comenzó como voluntaria en la feria West Linn Old Time hace unos años y luego se tomó un pequeño descanso. Cuando volvió a unirse en 2019, estaba decidida a completar su certificación. Ofreció una presentación en el Club Canby Kiwanis (en la foto) y se unió a sus compañeros en el evento Mercado Oregón City y un evento llamado “Cracked Pot”. Jessica Zahn (Class 43) has actually been a steady volunteer for years, showing up, especially to help with program infrastructure and planning. She even informed the rewriting of the Master Recycler Handbook's business chapter. She decided to make it official and report some hours this year. Jessica is a Board Member of the Recycling Advocates board helping organize the Oregon Zero Waste Conference (which will be happening August 27-28)! She also helped with the planning and messaging of the Eat Smart, Waste Less "snackable" video series (the snackable name was actually her idea).
Jessica Zahn (Clase 43) ha sido una voluntaria constante durante años, especialmente para ayudar con la infraestructura y la planificación del programa. Don Snedecor (Class 61) stayed nice a local with his hours. He helped the People's Food Co-op with recycling planning and staffed a booth at their Earth Day event a few years ago. He also presented to the Woodstock Neighborhood Association and set up recycling booths several times at the Woodstock Farmers' Market.

Kim Williams-Wesson (Class 76) spent about half of her Master Recycler hours converting what she learned in the course into an interactive learning project for her autistic grandson and his friends. She spent the other half of the 30 hours commitment with fellow classmates at the Safe Homes, Healthy Homes events through the North by Northeast Community Health Center. You can see from this photo with Veverly Campbell, that the group has built strong friendships.
