The Position

The Recycling Outreach Specialist position provides technical assistance, resources, and education to the community about recycling, solid waste, and sustainability/climate action. The position requires the ability to discuss a broad range of topics in a professional and courteous manner – with a focus on assistance to businesses and multifamily communities.

The position is full-time, primarily during standard office hours, with occasional evening or weekend event work. The position serves as a front-line staff person engaging with the public about their questions and complaints. Up to sixty percent of work time may be spent in the field working, while the remaining time will be in the office.

This is a non-exempt, SEIU-classified position. This position requires both remote and direct face-to-face support. There is one vacancy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide outreach, education, and technical assistance about recycling, solid waste, and sustainability/climate action in-person, by email or by phone. This community field work includes:

    • Direct assistance to businesses and multifamily communities about their programs and may include resource deliveries, site evaluations, and other technical assistance.

    • Outreach at local community events (including tabling and presentations)

  • Thoroughly track, detail and report on interactions and outcomes.

  • Respond to inquiries; investigate and resolve complaints by phone, email and in person; and represent Beaverton in informational and operational roles.

  • Create a positive experience for internal and external customers through professional and courteous behavior and creative problem resolution.

  • Participate in program planning including research, compiling information, preparing, and distributing materials; maintain databases and spreadsheets.

  • Ability to explain complex systems or situations to businesses, community members and/or haulers in understandable ways.

  • Provide back-up staffing for residential recycling and other general office needs including city mailroom other general office support, as needed.

  • Develop safe work habits and follow all required safety policies and procedures.

  • Ability to travel to sites using a program/city vehicle to provide on-site technical assistance to business and apartment communities throughout the city.

  • Actively promote an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.

  • Perform duties outlined in the Support Specialist 2 classification and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Three years of general office experience

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to residents and other local partners.

  • Valid driver's license and the ability to meet the city's driving standards

  • Ability to pass reference checks and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, communications or outreach related field.

  • Experience in a recycling/sustainability field or public outreach and education.

  • Knowledge of and experience working with the diverse and underrepresented communities. This experience is demonstrated by knowledge of the traditions, values, and customs of the community being served as well as the ability to identify specific examples of experience working with and building trust directly with individuals and families who identify with such communities.

  • Bilingual Competency in English and any of the following: Spanish or Arabic or Korean or Vietnamese or Chinese or Russian or Japanese, including speaking, reading and writing.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse customers, employees, contractors, other agencies, public officials, and the public.

  • Experience with software in the Microsoft Office Suite and Salesforce, or similar data management software.

Compensation

Wage Range: $21.17 - $28.36 hourly 

Starting wage will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps within the posted salary range may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position.  In addition to competitive pay, the city offers a wide variety of benefits to regular employees which make up an exceptional total compensation package.
