Staff Reporter for recycling trade magazine
Publisher and conference company seeks a full-time, Portland-area based writer to assist in producing a range of content for online and print.
This is a full time job with competitive salary, full health and dental benefits, and matching 401(k). The position is based in our office in Northeast Portland, with flexibility for some remote work. We are a small company that strives for excellence while also prioritizing work/life balance.
Aspects of the job include:
Investigate, research and report on news relevant to recycling businesses and organizations.
Edit stories from other editorial staffers for grammar, style and overall clarity/accuracy.
Meet daily, weekly and monthly deadlines for producing and editing content.
Identify and track industry trends and pitch story ideas to the editorial team.
Attend (and possibly speak at) industry conferences several times annually.
Organize and synthesize weekly list of article ideas for editorial meetings.
Other small editorial and conference-related tasks.
Experience in the recycling or environmental industry is a plus, but is not required.
In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following:
At least two years of journalism experience, including some data journalism experience.
Ability to generate a high volume of content (typically 10 short stories per week, plus additional print articles on a monthly basis and occasional long-form stories).
A working knowledge of Google Drive, Dropbox and Wordpress.
Fluency in social media and interest in the evolution of digital news and information.
Knowledge of AP style, plus a strong attention to detail.
A proactive approach to making contacts, developing sources and generating original content.
Willingness to work independently and meet deadlines while also thriving in small team atmosphere.
A schedule that allows potential travel to conferences and events 3-4 weeks per year (non-consecutive).
The hire must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or be willing to undergo weekly COVID-19 testing.
