As the regional solid waste authority, Metro oversees solid waste management – commonly known as garbage and recycling – generated in the region. Metro’s Waste Prevention and Environmental Services department (WPES) processes some of the region’s garbage and recycling at two transfer stations. WPES is committed to leading with equity in everything we do. We are guided by the 2030 Regional Waste Plan, which focuses on advancing racial equity, reducing the environmental and health impacts of products, maintaining and improving our garbage and recycling system, and rectifying the historic and ongoing inequities of that system on communities of color and others in our region.

Metro’s garbage and recycling disposal sites:

Metro Central Transfer Station, located at 6161 NW 61st Avenue in Portland

Metro Central is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is 1.5 miles from the NW Yeon & 44th

Trimet bus stop (ID 13637).

Metro South Transfer Station, located at 2001 Washington Street in Oregon City.

Metro South is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Trimet’s 2000 Block Washington (ID 14047) bus stop is located just outside the entrance to Metro South.

As the Asset and Environmental Stewardship (AES) Program Assistant II, you’ll work on site at each transfer station once a week. Otherwise, you’ll work in a hybrid environment. There are opportunities for remote work or to work from Metro’s Regional Center in inner NE Portland. You’ll support site managers and frontline staff with safety incident tracking and improvement. You’ll also assist with environmental reporting documents and organize construction design documents (as builts) and other files. This job is ideal for someone who loves to organize information, support colleagues, and interact with lots of people daily.

As the AES Program Assistant II you will:

  • Supports division staff by scheduling and taking notes at meetings.

  • File- daily and monthly reports.

  • Enter- daily data and develop, compile, format monthly reports.

  • Manage zoom scheduling and in-meeting support.

  • Format monthly inspection reports.

  • Scan, categorize and organize as built and other files.

  • Prepare and distribute compliance documents, storm/waste water and Department of Environmental Quality reports.

  • Track, file and report on safety incidents.

  • Provide hiring support for new positions.

  • Perform payroll processing for large contract projects.

Attributes for success:

  • Knowledge of best practices in office management and administration.

  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques for data management and record keeping.

  • Knowledge of business writing, composition, spelling, grammar, punctuation, proofreading and business etiquette.

  • Skill with Microsoft Office suite particularly outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, using cultural sensitivity and inclusive language. Ability to provide administrative and program support for complex projects and for managers.

  • Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with a variety of colleagues.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. and,

  • Two years of administrative and/or clerical work experience or,

  • Any combination of experience, education and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential job duties.

You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.

  • Progressively responsible experience in an administrative support capacity for mid- to senior-level managers

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Experience with the following software: Microsoft Office Suite; virtual meeting platforms such as WebEx, Zoom, MS Teams; Granicus Legistar; Ocularis; Opinator; SharePoint; project management software; and Adobe Pro and InDesign (or comparable software / systems) or the ability to learn them quickly.

  • Direct experience in the solid waste industry and/or the region's solid waste system.

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION

Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements, Metro’s internal equity review process, and the candidates’ qualifications, the appointment will typically be made between $25.49 - $29.51. The full-salary range for this position is $25.49 - $34.16 hourly.
