As Metro’s Sustainability Planner, you’ll use your talents to engage with diverse stakeholders to plan and implement projects, programs and policies, provide technical assistance in areas ranging from climate to waste prevention to green building, and gather and analyze data to track progress in reaching desired sustainability, climate justice and resilience and racial equity outcomes. Your work will support initiatives that create a more sustainable, equitable and resilient Metro, in alignment with Metro's Sustainability Plan and Strategic Plan to Advance Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

As the Sustainability Planner you will:

  • Plan, champion and execute strategies that advance progress toward Metro's sustainability, climate justice and resilience, and racial equity goals across our diverse portfolio of facilities and services – including the Oregon Zoo, Oregon Convention Center, Portland Expo Center, Portland'5 Centers for the Arts, Metro Regional Center, garbage and recycling facilities and regional parks.

  • Conduct research and analysis to inform strategy development for climate, waste, water, toxics, stormwater goals

  • Develop and implement policies, programs and projects to achieve sustainability outcomes, using a racial equity lens

  • Provide technical assistance to, and collaborate with, facility and department staff to implement sustainability, climate justice and resilience and racial equity best practices

  • Track, evaluate and report sustainability data to inform decision-making and provide accountability

  • Prepare and deliver communications to staff, elected officials and other stakeholders to highlight sustainability work

  • Plan and execute educational events and trainings to increase awareness and action

  • You will have the opportunity to serve the entire organization, but you'll have a home base with a fun and dedicated team of sustainability champions in our Capital Asset Management Department.

  • Hybrid work is acceptable for this position. You will need to reside in the State of Oregon or Washington for this opportunity.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, climate change, environmental studies/science, natural resource management, public administration, planning or related field; AND

  • Two years of experience in the development and implementation of policy, projects or programs related to sustainability, climate change, resource conservation, green building or related field; OR

  • We will consider any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Like to have qualifications:
You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.

  • Two or more years of work experience in government focusing on policy and program development and implementation

  • Preferred professional credentials: Sustainability Associate/Professional (International Society of Sustainability Professionals), Certified Climate Change Professional, LEED credential, or a comparable certification.

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION
Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements, Metro’s internal equity review process, and the candidates’ qualifications, the appointment will typically be made between $69,659 to $80,704.00 annually. The full-salary range for this position is $69,659.20 - $93,412.80 annually.

This position is not eligible for overtime, and is represented by AFSCME 3580. It is classified as an Associate Regional Planner (Download PDF reader). Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and do not include the specific duties and responsibilities of the positions.
