Introduction:
The Useful Waste Initiative (UWI) started as a PSU Center for Public Interest Design (CPID)
led initiative in 2017. It works to reframe the Architecture/Engineering/Construction
(AEC) industry's view on construction waste and encourages material diversion through
repurposing stand-alone construction mock-ups and supporting local houseless
communities. UWI (usefulwaste.org) and City Repair (cityrepair.org) received Metro County
Innovation and Investment funding for 2021 to expand outreach to the AEC industry and
develop additional resources to support material diversion and skill equity efforts.
We are looking for a construction supervisor/teacher to join the Useful Waste/City Repair
team to support our mock-up diversion initiative. A qualified candidate can lead/oversee
the conversion build of up to 3 tiny home pods and provide construction skill training to
laborers. With the intent to provide living wage and construction skills training to those
currently houseless who assist with the build-out of donated mock-ups. This is an hourly
paid position (up to $2,000) to support construction and construction skill building efforts
for the Useful Waste Initiative.
Skills employed include:
- Construction & construction training experience
- Community engagement and outreach
- Communication and skills training with houseless people and villages
- Communication with project teams and stakeholders (architects, contractors,
developers/owners)
Specific tasks or outcomes include:
- Commit 10 to 16 hours per week; Aug. 2021 until complete (approx. 3 weeks)
- Provide construction skill training and supervision
- Attend weekly project check-in meetings
- Attend social equity training with full UWI team
- Aid coordination and facilitation of donated mock-ups
Additional skills/experiences that can benefit the initiative:
- Multi-lingual (Spanish preferred)
- Houseless and affordable housing advocacy
- Experience interfacing with non-profits or community benefit projects
- diversity-equity-inclusion trainings
- lived experience of homelessness
