Position The Farm Educator contributes to the mission of the organization by leading onsite programs that focus on wetland ecology, gardening, healthy food access, natural history, compost, worms and more. The Farm Educator will teach Field Trips, Farm School (5th grade partnership with the David Douglas School District and other nearby districts), and facilitate garden activities with people of all ages.
The successful candidate will offer excellent communication and program delivery to the culturally diverse student participants, Zenger Farm staff and volunteers. This position is an on-call position reporting to the Education Managers of Zenger Farm. Time commitment This position would ideally start the week of March 12th, 2018. Educators choose which 1-3 set days a week (M-F) they teach and must be available from 9am-2pm on those days. There is a possibility to teach more than 3 days per week. There is no guaranteed number of hours per week, but most weeks range from 5-15 hours.
We aim to have the teaching schedule set 1 month in advance. The most concentrated hours are from FebruaryNovember. There is potential for hours to increase to full time in the summer.
Responsibilities
• Lead Farm Field Trip programs for students, preschool to adults • Lead Farm School program for 5th grade students • Facilitate garden and farm projects with children and adults • Manage groups safely and with inclusivity, kindness, patience, and positive discipline • Interact with participants and volunteers in an enthusiastic and friendly manner • Assist with day-to-day volunteer management • Maintain a safe and organized work environment for youth and adults • Maintain clear and open communication with Zenger Farm staff and volunteers Qualifications
• A commitment to and passion for Zenger Farm’s mission. • At least two years of experience leading education programs and/or working with youth. • Experience and comfort with group and behavior management • Interest in gardening, farming, or the natural history of the Pacific Northwest • Excellent communication skills and enjoy working with both children and adults • Complete a criminal background check • Be able to obtain Food Handlers Card, First Aid, CPR certification (paid for by Zenger) • Be positive, flexible, and self-directed • Ability to work in a farm setting, walk or stand for extended periods of time, and work in inclement weather Qualifications preferred: • Bilingual Spanish/English • Ability to lead groups of students and deliver presentations in Spanish and English Compensation
