Lauren Norris has officially retired, spending her days on the Willamette or hiking with her dog. Lauren ran the Master Recycler program for sixteen years and has left an impressive legacy. The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability wrote this lovely piece recognizing her commitment to outreach, education, and inclusion.

Congratulations to Class 82 who graduated back in June! Thank you Red Lodge for hosting an amazing cohort in this community designed Master Recycler class. Can’t wait to see you all in action.

Quincenturion
Master Recyclers who complete 500 hours become Quincenturions and get an extra button to wear next to their badge and 100 button.
Kathy Suri (Class 71) reported her 500th hour! Kathy and fellow resident John Block took the Master Recycler training with a goal in mind. They wanted to improve recycling, compost and waste prevention options in their Senior Living Community Mirabella. As leaders in the Sustainable Operations committee there, they started extensive programs including a bottle drop collection that helps pay for other activities, a reusable mug project, articles, and activities in the community. They did waste audits and regularly worked to tinker and improve the signage, containers and collection. They even set up information booths at the farmers' market next door. Their efforts were so impressive, they started networking with 5 other senior living facilities in the region and organizing conferences where green teams could exchange notes and receive training. Kathy was recently invited to a statewide gathering where she could continue to expand the networking in this area. Thank you for all your enthusiasm, creative thinking, and hard work, Kathy!
¡Kathy Suri (Clase 71) reporto su hora número 500! Kathy y su colega residente John Block tomaron la capacitación de Expertos en Reciclaje con un objetivo en mente. Querían mejorar las opciones de reciclaje, compostaje y prevención de desechos en su Asilo de Ancianos Mirabella. Como líderes en el comité de Operaciones Sustentables allí, comenzaron extensos programas que incluyen una recolección de botellas que ayuda a pagar otras actividades, un proyecto de tazas reutilizables, artículos y actividades en la comunidad. Hicieron auditorías de residuos y trabajaron regularmente para modificar y mejorar la señalización, los contenedores y la recolección. Incluso instalaron puestos de información en el mercado de agricultores que tenian de vecinos. Five people reported over 100 hours since July. These Master Recyclers are Centurions and get 100 hours centurion button to wear next to their Master Recycler badge.

Vikki Obuhanych (Class 78) has not only a passion for recycling, but for animals, too. She's put her recycling skills to work hosting at least 8 BottleDrop collections for Animal Aid, Inc. What a purrfect way to serve two causes at once! Vikki also volunteered at the Beaverton City Library swap. Your fellow Master Recyclers (and I'm sure the sweet animals at Animal Aid) thank you!

Bethany Grabow (Class 78) pretty much swapped her way through her Master Recycler hours organizing 5 community swaps. Thanks to her organizing, hundreds of people were able to donate and take home clothing, art supplies, toys, games and puzzles. You know a swap event is successful when every donation finds a new home like they did at the most recent event in Beaverton. Thank you Bethany!!

Vici Wolff (left in the picture)
Vici Wolff (Class 74) is a natural at being a Master Recycler. She jumped in even during the course to participate in the Garden Home Sustainability Fair in 2019. She staffed City of Beaverton and Washington County recycling information tables at multiple events from Farmers' Markets to the one pictured here in a multifamily community. She also joined in collection events in SW Portland, Beaverton, and Hillsboro to help residents understand special non-curbside recycling options. Vici used her Master Recycler knowledge to become a recycling resource in her own community, as well. She did presentations at church events and small community gatherings like her Food as Medicine class. Thank you for your deep commitment in the community, Vici!
Vici Wolff (Clase 74) es una natural Experta en Reciclaje. Se involucró incluso durante el curso para participar en la Feria de Sostenibilidad de Garden Home en 2019. Karla García Yañez (Class 73) and her mother attended the first Spanish language Master Recycler class together in 2019 at Centro Cultural. Since then she has spent over 100 hours with the Environmental Promoters sharing resources and information on toxics reduction and recycling. Thank you for all your work, Karla!

Helen Krieger (Class 66) completed her 100th Master Recycler hour at the PlanetCon event in June, and was also at the Beaverton Library Art Supplies swap a few days before. Helen has made some many wonderful connections in the community. She's engaged market goers at the Hillsboro and Forest Grove Farmers' markets, joined a westside maker fair, supported Washington County in schools outreach, provided information to her neighbors and members of church. And she has been a core member of the team at the PlanetCon events. Thank you Helen!

Gregoria Arzate (Class 80) has a passion for volunteering that has taken her on quite the adventure. She's met her hours tabling at the Forest Grove Farmers Market, attending the Poop to Power tour, and helping out at the Trashpalooza Sherwood and Rose Grove bulky waste event. She's also volunteered at the Beaverton City Library Repair Fair, and has an interest in less-toxic cosmetics that are heathier for our body and the planet. Thank you, Gregoria! Jenipher Odom (Class 79) rolled in her final certification hours with Clackamas County staff and friends at the Gladstone Parade back in August. It was a long, hot walk with a choreographed cart routine, but Jenipher rocked it! She is also a founding member of Expertos en Reciclaje de Clackamas, tabled on toxics at the Canby Spring Garden Fair, shared her recycling knowledge at the Clackamas County Fair, and more. Congrats, Jenipher! We appreciate the work you do serving your community.

Ángela Gonzalez-Taylor (Clase 80) asistió al curso con el Centro Cultural del Condado de Washington donde solía trabajar. Ángela Gonzalez-Taylor (Class 80) attended the course with Centro Cultural of Washington County where she used to work. She joined with fellow classmates in efforts in that county, but lives in Milwaukie and began to meet up with fellow Spanish Speaking Master Recyclers in Clackamas County. She helped at the County fair, outreach in apartments, and three Repair Fairs. Thanks for everything, Ángela!!

Jill Scheidel (Class 78) completed her 30 hours at the Beaverton Library where she works. She helped organize two swap events, one focused on Art Supplies (pictured here) and one focused on Toys and Board Games. The Beaverton community has really been enthusiastic about these events. Because of the great focus on specific items, people have been able to donate and find items that they know that they will use again. Congratulations, Jill!
Jill Scheidel (Clase 78) completó sus 30 horas en la Biblioteca Beaverton donde trabaja. Kathi Barry
Kathi Barry (Class 71) became a Certified Master Recycler by supporting a number of efforts in Gresham (Arts Fest, Earth Day). She also joined a Party for the Planet at the Zoo. But Kathi really found her home at the buzz and excitement that takes place at James Recycling events. Thank you, Kathi!

Becky Hoven (Class 72) focused most of her hours engaging the community with tips and resources on saving food from going to waste with the Eat Smart, Waste Less campaign. She also shared her enthusiasm for repair and reuse through Portland's Resourceful PDX program and Clackamas' Fast Fashion and Sew a Button table. She was found to promote these waste prevention programs at multiple Sunday Parkways, City of Portland Fix-it Fairs and finished off her hours helping at a community swap event at Open Signal. Thank you for your dedication to saving our planet's resources, Becky!

Noemi Zamora (Class 82) is the first of Class 82 to become a Certified Master Recycler! Recycling is a family passion for the Zamora's. Noemi's sister attended the recent Centro Cultural Master Recycler course in Spanish. This spring Noemi and her mother attended the community course with Red Lodge Transition Services. They joined a small group of 6 other Spanish-speaking Master Recyclers in Clackamas to start providing recycling tips in their community in Spanish. This is going to be a powerful team! Kelly Anderson (Class 63) engaged folks in the far westside of our region on food waste, toxics prevention and the three R's. She helped multifamily communities have better access to recycling, staffed tables at the Hillsboro FM, Brookwood Library, and the Washington County Fair. She also joined forces with fellow Master Recyclers on five of their signature westside events PlanetCon. Thank you for all your efforts in sharing resources in the community, Kelly.

Sharon Noell (middle)
Sharon Noell (Class 74) became a Certified Master Recycler at PlanetCon! Sharon staffed a recycling table at the Humane Society Wellness fair while she was still in class! She also did a personal project of offering a recycling presentation at the Juanita Pohl Senior Center where she is a regular volunteer. She said it was a success because "we had a lot of fun, we laughed out, we learned a lot of stuff."

Max (Class 78) took the training last fall when we had to an online format. But that didn't dim Max's enthusiasm and commitment and as soon as it was possible Max joined in many fun live activities in the area. Max helped multifamily communities have better access to recycling information by delivering resources right to the door. She also staff information booths at farmers markets, a swap event in the Beaverton Library, and three different Repair Fair activities! Thanks for spreading your enthusiasm for Reduce, Repair and Recycle, Max!!
