Are you an experienced educator who enjoys working with a variety of audiences? Metro is looking for two experienced full-time educators to join a small team to primarily deliver school-based waste prevention presentations to classes of K-12th grade students and teachers across the region, with an emphasis on natural resources, composting, recycling, household toxics reduction, and climate change.

Ideal candidates will quickly build rapport with students and teachers and use interactive techniques to engage students in conversations about the topic throughout the presentation. These positions assist with program design, development, and evaluation; program marketing and scheduling; presentation material acquisition and upkeep; and program data collection, management and reporting. Additionally, these positions will assist with community-based youth and family programming as we co-create these projects with community partners in the future. These positions carry out policies and procedures focusing on advancing Metro’s 2030 Regional Waste PlanStrategic Plan to Advance Racial Equity and best practices in child psychology, multicultural education, instructional design, and program evaluation.

One position primarily focuses on K-5th grade youth (Elementary). During an average week, this educator spends 2-3 days presenting formal waste prevention programs to groups of 15-35 students in grades K-5 and training workshops for adult learners in the fields of waste prevention, natural resources, youth education or similar. Each presentation day often includes up to 3 or 4 back-to-back presentations per day. Additionally, this educator will deliver 1-3 tours per month at the Metro Paint Swan Island paint recycling facility to 4th-5th grade and middle school groups of 30 or less students.

The second position primarily focuses on 6th-12th grade youth (Secondary). During an average week, this educator spends 2-3 days presenting formal waste prevention programs to groups of 15-45 students in grades 6-12 and training workshops for adult learners in the fields of waste prevention, climate change, youth education or similar. Each presentation day often includes up to 5 or 6 back-to-back presentations per day. Additionally, this educator will deliver 1-3 tours per month at the Metro Central Transfer Station and Metro Paint facility to middle school and high school groups of 30 or less students.

In Metro’s waste prevention education programs, youth and adults learn about recycling and composting, natural resources, climate change and alternatives to toxics. Programs include elementary classroom presentationssecondary classroom presentationscommunity workshops and eventslearning gardenspaid youth internships, and distance learning resources. Programs are available free of charge to public and private schools and groups located in Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties. Each year, through classroom presentations alone the team reaches over 5% of all K-12 public school students in the region.

These two Education Coordinators will report to the Education and Youth Leadership (EYL) manager under the Community Services and Education (CSE) division of Metro’s Waste Prevention and Environmental Services (WPES) department. While these positions do not directly supervise staff, they may provide guidance and coaching to new or less experienced employees.

As an Education Coordinator I you will:

  • Assist in working with internal and external stakeholders (WPES staff, teachers, principals, district staff, higher education institutions, community-based organization leaders, parents and students) through a co-creation design process to develop waste prevention programs and materials that meet the needs and lived experiences of culturally diverse audiences.

  • Assist in scheduling presentations; provide teacher email confirmations and follow-up surveys; monitor, clean, repair, inventory, and store materials, supplies and equipment; provide coordinated care for multiple vermicomposting bins; and general maintenance of program vehicles.

  • Assist in developing waste prevention education long- and short-range program goals; evaluate program objectives, policies and processes and provide recommendations to the Education and Youth Leadership team; participate in the development of program or operational guidelines.

  • With an applied equity lens, assist in evaluating program effectiveness, learning impact and cost/benefit impact of waste prevention programming. This includes but is not limited to documenting, compiling and tracking activity costs, conducting assessments via teacher surveys and analyzing historical participation data to identify gaps in programming and across school districts.   

  • Represent our EYL Team, CSE Division and WPES Department in relevant task forces, meetings with other governmental agencies, general public, and community organizations.

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in field related to program area and,

  • Three years of related experience or,

  • Any combination of experience, education and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential job duties.

Required: 

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to pass a driving records check

  • Ability to pass the Oregon Department of Education’s Central Background Registry background check

Work location: 
The majority of work will be split between a school setting and an office environment. The office environment may include a home office or a reservable office space at Metro Regional Center which is located at 600 NE Grand Avenue in Portland. Other settings may include the Metro Paint facility, Metro Central Transfer Station facility, as well as community-based organization meeting rooms across the tri-county region. Mileage reimbursement is available for personal car use and Metro fleet vehicles are available as well.
  
Working conditions or environment: 
While this position’s schedule often remains consistent, the employee will be expected to flex their schedule to work some evening and weekend shifts annually in order to support individual and team programming needs. 
Frequent reaching, walking, standing, lifting, stooping, or carrying of equipment and materials may be required. The individual in this position may be required to lift and carry up to 40 pounds. Daily use of tools and equipment includes office technology and software (ranging from Microsoft suite to remote teaching tools), presentation equipment such as video and sound systems, and education equipment/manipulatives such as tabletop displays, educational kits and interactive games.  

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION
Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act , our internal equity review process, and the candidate’s qualifications the appointment will typically be made between $69,721.60 -$80,683.20. The full-salary range for this position is $69,721.60 - $93,433.60 annually.

This position is not eligible for overtime, it's represented by AFSCME 3580 and is classified as an Education Coordinator I. Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and do not include the specific duties and responsibilities of the positions.
