The Position

The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) is seeking a Community Cleanup Coordinator. The Community Cleanup Coordinator will collaborate with the BPS Public Trash Team, contractors, community groups, and volunteers in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating community collection events and volunteer cleanup programs. This position will be responsible for working closely with community members, nonprofit groups, and other government agencies to plan successful community events to properly dispose of bulky waste and other hard to dispose of items. Additionally, the coordinator will support cleanup efforts by volunteer groups throughout the city, developing resources and connecting groups to those resources.

Role & Responsibilities

The primary focus of this position will be assisting in the development and implementation of city cleanup programs including community collection events and support for volunteer cleanup efforts.

Additionally, this position:

  • Performs professional, administrative, and operational duties, and community development and outreach activities, by participating in ongoing working groups, special project teams, and collaborative efforts with staff and management.

  • Provides internal and external customer service to City employees and the public on community collection events and volunteer cleanup efforts.

  • Delivers community collection events and volunteer cleanup services to the public through collaborative efforts with City staff and external partners.

  • Assists in the development and monitoring of contract and grant programs, ensures compliance with requirements, updates and submit reports, drafts related documents.

  • Collaborates with Public Trash Team, contractors, community groups, and volunteers in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating community collection events and volunteer cleanup programs.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this position has demonstrated a commitment to working collaboratively with a broad range of community partners while maintaining equity as a core value. Knowledge of the waste collection system and skills in volunteer management is highly valuable. Direct experience participating in cleanup efforts is desired.

Work Location
Currently, many positions with the City of Portland are being performed remotely due to COVID-19. Some employees are working from home full-time, while other roles cannot be filled in a remote status. In the future, current positions classified as “full-time remote” could: 1) remain full-time remote, 2) become a remote/onsite mix, or 3) revert to full-time at a city work location.

To Qualify

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their cover letter and résumé how their education, training, work experience, and/or lived experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Knowledge and/or experience with event planning and/or community outreach activities.

  2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Bureau/Office managers and staff, representatives of other governmental agencies, the public, and others encountered in the course of work.

  3. Ability to collaborate with communities of color and people traditionally underrepresented in local decision-making; facilitate inclusive participation in programs and activities; communicate cross-culturally.

  4. Ability to communicate clearly, logically, and persuasively, both verbally and in writing; prepare concise and comprehensive reports, correspondence, and other documents.

  5. Ability to analyze, interpret, explain, and apply relevant laws, regulations, ordinances, policies, and procedures.

  • A valid state driver's license and acceptable driving record at the time of hire.
