It’s vision is empowered, healthy communities living in a world without waste. TfP implements two main programs: the Sustainability Education Program (SEP), and Ground Score Association, through which TfP directly engages hundreds of community members that self-identify as low-income and/or BIPOC and diverts hundreds of pounds of trash from the landfill. TfP’s Sustainability Education Program (SEP) focuses on building relationships and working with residents on multi-family housing sites. The SEP consists of a youth education program as well as an Environmental Promoter program, which hires and trains residents to educate their own communities on recycling and waste reduction through self-identified and actualized projects and outreach. This program directly works with over 400 youth and 40 families monthly, and has provided employment and leadership development opportunities to over 80 multifamily housing residents. Ground Score Association is a peer-led, participatory program that facilitates low-barrier job opportunities for community members that collect cans and bottles as a main source of revenue and/or face work and housing insecurity. It has provided jobs in litter collection, event waste management, and advocacy relating to equitable access to waste and recycling services. Position Summary: Trash for Peace (TfP) seeks a passionate, organized, and experienced individual to join our team as a Youth and Recycling Coordinator. This position involves two distinct roles within TfP, one as the Youth Coordinator, and one as a Recycling Coordinator to lead a multifamily recycling project in partnership with Metro. The Youth Coordinator is responsible for implementing the Trash for Peace Sustainability Education Program (SEP), a dynamic and hands-on program that is hosted on multifamily housing communities, on 3 of these housing sites throughout NE and East Multnomah County. The Recycling Coordination work is based on multi-year work that Trash for Peace has been involved in with Metro (our regional government) to help redesign the recycling and garbage decals for our region, as part of Metro’s 2030 Regional Waste Plan. This role will be coordinating efforts to replace old decals with the updated ones on 250 multifamily housing sites in NE and East Multnomah County. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (to include, but not limited to): Youth Service Coordination, about 60% of time ● Coordinate and oversee regular after-school programming for youth (ages 7-18) on 3 multifamily housing sites with predominantly Spanish-speaking households in East Multnomah County and NE Portland, including implementing Trash for Peace’s SEP programming (during COVID, this involves delivering sustainability education kits and materials, school supplies, and other resources) ● Create partnerships with local organizations to expand resources available to youth and families on site ● Work with youth and families to create and facilitate progress towards individual volunteer, education, and employment goals ● Organize and execute community-building events connecting residents to local resources ● Facilitate listening sessions where residents voice their ideas, opinions, and feedback to ensure programming is responsive to community needs ● Work in collaboration with the RCSC (Resident Community Services Coordinator) to plan events, send monthly newsletters, and provide resources to residents ● Collect and input data related to outreach and activities in Google Docs and Word Multifamily Decal Project Coordination, about 40% of time ● Coordinate decal removal and re-stickering of recycling stickers on 250 multi-family housing sites in East Multnomah County ● Supervise staff in teams of 2 during the removal ● Drive fleet vehicle to facilitate this project ● Collect and report all data relevant to this project POSITION REQUIREMENTS ● Interest and experience in Sustainability, Recycling, and Sustainability Education. ● Spanish speaking (fluent). ● Ability to work and drive in East Multnomah County. ● Experience working with youth and adults from a variety of cultural backgrounds. ● Experience leading activities, workshops, or presentations with youth and/or adults. ● Experience developing and/or implementing curriculum. ● Proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. ● Flexibility, a sense of humor, and willingness to work with a vibrant, diverse, and dynamic team. ● Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Oregon and an acceptable driving record. ● Strong organizational skills. ● Regular and reliable attendance and dependability. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS ● Ability to manage volunteers. ● Experience performing a wide variety of outreach, including door-to-door and community workshops.
