If so, Metro invites you to apply for our new Community Impact and Capacity Building Coordinator position on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team.  

The Community Impact and Capacity Building Coordinator will help manage Metro’s newly created Capacity Building grants program for organizations working in and for BIPOC communities and provide strategic project management support to Metro Council and the office of the Chief Operating Officer (COO) on special projects related to community response and civic engagement. 

This is a full-time limited-duration position with an expected end date of Dec. 31, 2023.

What you will do
In this position, you will be responsible for continuing the co-creation of the Capacity Building for Racial Equity program with Metro staff and community partners. You will also manage Metro leadership's commitments in response to BIPOC community calls to action to ensure internal coordination and follow-through. Specific duties will include:

      Capacity Building for Advancing Racial Equity: 

  • Develop and manage a work plan for program development and implementation of the Community Capacity Building for Racial Equity grants program

  • Maintain advanced knowledge of the nonprofit funding landscape, particularly as it relates to BIPOC-led organizations and organizations focused on civic and community engagement with BIPOC communities

  • Support Metro's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program Director in collaborations with external partners in philanthropy and partner agencies to advance civic engagement in the region

  • Support grantees and Metro procurement staff in co-creating contracts

  • Establish, manage and maintain long-term relationships and build trust between Metro Council, Metro staff and the selected community-based organizations through the three-year grant program

  • Produce reports and strategy documents to share learnings and further grow the program

  • Collaborate with other Metro grant managers to share best practices and learning around grant management using a racial equity lens


       Coordination of Strategic Community Response:

  • Provide project management support to deliver on strategic Council and COO commitments to community calls to action

  • Serve as a liaison between BIPOC community partner organizations and Metro Council and COO and manage ongoing engagement

  • Coordinate and support collaboration across the agency on action items responding to community calls to action


       Advisory Committees to Metro Council:

  • Support recruitment of community leaders to serve on Metro advisory committees

  • Support the growth of Metro's Committee on Racial Equity and Metro Council partnerships to advance racial equity


Traits for success

  • Proven experience working with and building relationships with culturally specific organizations, demonstrated through established relationships with individuals and organizations within these communities

  • Strategic approach to navigating obstacles, complex relationships, and political contexts in order to advance racial equity goals

  • Understanding of the landscape of nonprofit civic engagement and BIPOC-led organizations

  • Solutions oriented approach to navigating challenging relationships and political dynamics

  • Ability to process feedback and input form a variety of stakeholders and perspectives in order to build collaboration and advance goals

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to distil and effectively communicate complex concepts and projects

  • Strong familiarity with systems that create racial barriers and the historical and current conditions affecting diverse communities

  • Strong familiarity with social change practices, particularly in racial justice and related fields (e.g., poverty, labor/employment, criminal justice, immigration, education, health care, food justice, reproductive justice, LGBTQ rights, etc.)

  • Experience building buy-in and ownership among stakeholder to advance racial equity goals and outcomes

  • Ability to adapt and pivot in order to be responsive to dynamic and shifting contexts

  • Demonstrated ability to use a trauma-informed approach to racial equity work

  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekend or holiday shifts


Experience and educationThe successful candidate will have any combination of education and lived experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job. An example of education and experience that would provide these skills might include: 

  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience advancing programs with a racial equity lens and/or advancing civic engagement for BIPOC communities; AND

  • A Bachelor's or other degree in economics, business, labor studies, public policy, ethnic studies, sociology, urban planning, or related disciplines


Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with community organizing and civic engagement, particularly within Black, Indigenous, and communities of color.

  • Trusted relationships with community organizations who serve Black, Indigenous, and communities of color

  • Effective skills in facilitating groups with a variety of stakeholders.

  • Experience building coalitions to address systems change
