Summary

The Executive Director will provide leadership and vision to SCRAP PDX and the mission. Responsible for all financial, operational, and administrative activities, including, but not limited to: fiscal management, staff development, equity and inclusion work, organizational and strategic development, fundraising, grant writing, marketing, and public relations, creative reuse center oversight, and partnerships. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors and Leadership Team and exercise independent judgment and leadership skills. They will cultivate relationships with local stakeholders and participates with staff in community engagement as the primary SCRAP Creative Reuse Ambassador.

About SCRAP PDX

SCRAP PDX is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire creative reuse and environmentally sustainable behavior by providing educational programs and affordable materials to the community. SCRAP PDX was started in 1998, by a group of teachers who wanted to find a home for their leftover classroom materials. From those humble beginnings, SCRAP PDX has grown into a 10,000 sf creative reuse center in downtown Portland.

Required Qualifications

  • Four (4) years or more of management experience in a nonprofit environment overseeing financial operations and driving significant results or commensurate experience

  • Commitment to SCRAP’s mission, creative reuse, and values

  • Commitment to racial justice, equity, and inclusion with advanced cultural and racial competence to champion this work within SCRAP and to all stakeholders

  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, including excellent oral, written and listening communication

  • Quantitative knowledge and problem-solving skills in order to analyze, assess and manage financial, technology, administrative and operational execution used in decision-making

  • Primary driver for fundraising, grant writing, and stakeholder development efforts that fit into and support the strategic plan

  • Organizational management with the ability to implement program strategies and oversee multiple programs

  • Experienced in strategic planning and execution

  • Strong critical thinker and problem solver who can lead research strategy and tactically manage plans

  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit and who will not be afraid to roll up their sleeves to get the job done, regardless of the task

Preferred Qualifications

  • Retail experience and understanding of the nonprofit retail model

  • Reuse or environmental experience and knowledge

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Oversight

  • Assures that SCRAP’s structure and operations align with the mission and long-range strategies

  • Works closely with the Board Chair on planning and visioning for the organization

  • Oversees the development and evaluation of program metrics

  • Upholds and builds upon existing equity and inclusion work

  • Reviews year-end program evaluations, approves logic models (or SMART goals), and reports to Board

  • Works directly with the Board of Directors and the Leadership Team to craft overall organizational strategies, goals, and objectives

  • Solid communication with the Board of Directors

  • Works with the Strategic Alliance Director on building partner creative reuse centers

  • Meaningfully engages all board members in the mission and work of the organization

  • Oversees staffing, workflow functions, programs, and services

Administration and Operations

  • Oversees state compliance and other nonprofit registrations

  • Monthly Board meeting with written and oral presentations

  • Identifies and develops revenue streams that support the organizational structure

  • Approves and signs non-binding agreements, and other legally-binding agreements as approved by the Board 

  • Oversight of daily operations in the creative reuse center, including sales, donations, and educational programs

  • Ensures staff coverage for creative reuse center and education programs, including working in the store and education program assistance if needed

  • With staff, oversight of volunteer program and tasks 

Financial Management (Includes but not limited to)

  • Manages and develops organization’s annual operating budget in cooperation with the finance committee, other staff, and, when applicable, the Treasurer and consultants

  • Approves expenditures within budget

  • Member of the Finance Committee to ensure organization’s financial goals are met

  • Works with Finance Manager on AP/AR and other financial reporting

  • Works with Treasurer and Finance Manager on annual 990 filing and other audit items as needed

Staff and Organizational Management

  • Empowers a team of talented, entrepreneurial individuals with a shared goal and strategy to work toward the growth of SCRAP by providing effective and inspiring leadership

  • Oversight of all HR activities, policies, and practices in the organization

  • Responsible for all hiring, development, disciplinary and terminating responsibilities for staff

  • Fosters an environment for empowering staff development and teamwork while maintaining a positive and productive work environment

  • Maintains confidential employment records

  • Reports to governance committee regarding potential HR issues

  • Ensures compliance with State Statutes and best employment practices

  • With the Leadership Team, develops, communicates, and maintains Board-approved Employee Policies

  • Continues to build an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment

Community Engagement, Fundraising, and Partnerships

  • Builds relationships with stakeholders, other organizations, local governments, schools, and other partners

  • Represents the programs and points of view of the organization to agencies, organizations, media and the general public

  • Cultivates an environment that nurtures and recognizes supporters, volunteers, and community members

  • Positively and creatively raises the awareness of SCRAP and its programs throughout the greater community

  • Ensures consistent marketing and branding presence on social media and other promotional opportunities and oversight of marketing functions

  • Leads the planning and execution of all fundraising activities

  • Develops creative solutions with local stakeholders and partners to receive mutual benefit from events, activities, and publicity

  • Works with Board Grants Committee on applying for grants

Expectations of all SCRAP Staff

  • Work as part of a team with other staff, programs and Board of Directors to fulfill SCRAP’s mission

  • Communicate effectively and focus on good stakeholder relations

  • Greet stakeholders professionally, warmly and helpfully

  • Stay current with the environmental services community and sources of information and referral for callers and customers

  • Stay current with developments in recycling and reuse, including legislation and availability of recyclable materials markets

  • When necessary, say “no” tactfully and suggest other community resources to as needed

  • With other staff, act as an Ambassador for SCRAP in the community
