Are you an effective communicator with a solid understanding of the current political environment, and a strong aptitude for recognizing and handling confidential matters with discretion? We are currently seeking a Policy Advisor who will thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment while maintaining a high level of attention to detail, and providing information and excellent customer service to a wide range of people. 

In this role, you will provide complex program support to a Metro Councilor and function as a member of the Council Office team. To learn more about the Metro Council, our councilors and district boundaries, visit oregonmetro.gov/regional-leadership/metro-council.


What you will do

  • Act as a resource for others concerning the interpretation of agency policy and objectives, based on a strong understanding of the councilor's goals, perspectives and opinions

  • Serve as a liaison between the councilor and agency staff, staff at Metro's partner jurisdictions and the public

  • Represent the councilor's perspectives and opinions by preparing letters for signature, responding directly to phone calls and sending email correspondence to Metro departments, other agencies and the general public

  • Perform as part of the Council Office team and collaborate successfully with colleagues, councilors and interns

  • Compile data from narrative and statistical reports, and analyze data to prepare the councilor for meetings, speaking engagements and other functions; draft memos and talking points; provide content for social media and other public communication

  • Maintain the councilor's calendar and appointments, schedule meetings, make travel arrangements, assist with administrative tasks and coordinate general office operations

Traits for success

  • Demonstrated success in providing complex administrative program support to a high-level official or executive

  • Excellent organization, communication, and research and analysis skills; sense of humor and grace under pressure

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain discretion with confidential or sensitive information

  • Familiarity with local public government regulations and procedures; comfort working in a political environment

  • Knowledge of issues in Metro's portfolio, including transportation and land use, parks and natural areas, solid waste and recycling, and visitor venues


Experience and education

  • Three years of progressively responsible and complex policy and administrative support experience, AND

  • A bachelor's degree in public affairs, political science or a related field; OR

  • Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
