1000 Friends of Oregon helps create a state where you and your family can live in a walkable city or town with housing options, enjoy local food from local farms, and benefit from all of Oregon’s landscapes – those working, healthy, and wild. We work with Oregonians around the state to advocate for their land use priorities, educate people about Oregon’s statewide planning program, and publish research on the use of Oregon’s land. We are a team of professionals who believe that Oregon is an intentional place – a place where people have chosen to try and ensure a sustainable future. Specifically, we believe in protecting farm and forest lands from being subdivided and developed, we believe that not every trip from point A to point B should require a car, and we believe that all Oregon towns and cities should provide enough housing options that Oregonians can afford. Our work, implementing and strengthening Oregon’s Land Use Planning System, operates at statewide, regional, and local levels as appropriate.
Position Description
The Community Engagement Coordinator works at the intersection of community priorities and 1000 Friend’s program goals. The Engagement Coordinator will work primarily in the Portland Metro area, within our Metro for Everyone program. The Engagement Coordinator will also support the organization’s engagement efforts statewide. 1000 Friends’ Metro for Everyone program brings together shared voices advocating for regional policies and investments that connect housing, transportation choices, and greenspaces in every neighborhood in the Portland metropolitan area. Working with the Metro for Everyone Program Manager, the Engagement Coordinator will help plan and execute activities to connect people and organizations to regional planning policies, programs, and advocacy efforts where issues of housing, transportation, and greenspaces come together. The Coordinator will help ensure that Metro and local government decision-making are responsive to community objectives. A smaller part of the position will be to provide support for programrelated engagement efforts in other parts of the state. This position reports to the Metro for Everyone Program Manager and will be responsible for the following activities: Land Use Leadership Initiative • Coordinate the Portland Metro area Land Use Leadership Initiative (LULI), 1000 Friends’ cohort-based, core leadership development program. Activities include: o Develop program summary, application, and selection criteria. Distribute informational materials to partner and community organizations. Review applicants and select fellows. o Host ten training sessions, including an overview of Oregon’s Land Use Planning Program and Statewide Goals. Metro Community Engagement: • With the Metro for Everyone Program Manager and the Deputy Director, identify key collaborations and opportunities to bring together shared voices advocating for regional policies and investments that connect housing, transportation choices, and greenspaces in every neighborhood. • Work with communities within the Metro region to define and elevate their priorities for housing, transportation, and greenspaces. • Help design and execute activities – such as community events, surveys, walking tours, social media, and other outreach activities – that inform and engage new partners so they can share their community priorities with civic leaders related to housing, transportation, and greenspaces. • Work with Metro to help facilitate communication and engagement with constituents, particularly those historically under-served and/or under-engaged in Metro processes. • Provide support to the 1000 Friends’ Portland for Everyone program during the final phase of two Portland City Council housing zoning projects - the Residential Infill and Better Housing by Design projects. Activities will include: o Helping to schedule speakers and prepare materials for community and neighborhood presentations. o Assisting in activities to prepare partner organizations for final city council hearings, including testimony recruitment and training. o Posting news, policy, and other content regularly on Portland for Everyone’s social media channels. • Provide support for 1000 Friends program-related engagement activities in other parts of the state; which will occur on an occasional basis. As in almost any non-profit, everyone on the 1000 Friends team fills many roles. The Coordinator will also help with other organizational priorities as needed. These include: • Develop mutually beneficial relationships with coalition leaders, volunteers, and members. • Identify, recruit, and train volunteers to take action on 1000 Friends’ priority campaigns. • Maintain consistent records of relationships in 1000 Friends’ database. • Identify opportunities for 1000 Friends to strengthen our organization and increase public support for our mission.
