The Position
The Recycling Specialist provides staff support and customer service about recycling, solid waste and sustainability to the community. The position requires the ability to discuss waste prevention, recycling, sustainability and related issues with Beaverton residents in a professional and courteous manner. The classification title for this position is Support Specialist II.
The position is full-time, with occasional evening and weekend event work and will serve as the front-line staff person engaging with the public about their questions and complaints.

Responsibilities
Respond to community inquiries about recycling and waste collection; investigate and resolve complaints by phone, email and in person; and represent the city in informational and operational roles.
Between 20-40% of the time will be community field work assistance or outreach, including:
Assistance to multifamily communities (resource deliveries, site evaluations, technical assistance, and data management updates).
Outreach events to engage residents about recycling or waste prevention activities, such as residential composting or the Eat Smart, Waste Less campaign (tabling at local community events, presentations etc.).
Create a positive experience for residents through professional and courteous behavior and creative problem resolution.
Participate in program development and implementation, including research, compiling information, preparing and distributing materials.
Provide office and clerical support for the city sustainability program.
Act as primary contact for the city community garden program – facilitating annual garden plot registration and ongoing support.
Cold-call and promote recycling and composting to businesses.
Provide back up support for city mail room and other duties as assigned.
Support and respect diversity in the workplace.
Other duties as assigned.
The Ideal Candidate
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
Three years of general office experience.
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse customers, employees and other agencies, public officials and the general public.
Ability to provide excellent customer service to residents and other local partners.
Valid driver's license and the ability to meet the city's driving standards.
Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (especially Outlook, Word and Excel) to collect, compile and analyze financial, statistical and technical data relating to recycling and waste reduction.
Ability to pass reference and background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate or Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, communications or outreach related field.
Experience in the recycling/sustainability field and experience in public outreach and education.
Knowledge of the local solid waste & recycling processes (what's recyclable at the curb and why).
Ability to interpret and explain technical and/or complex policies and programs with clarity to a variety of audiences.
Ability to read, write and speak fluent Spanish is not required, but would be beneficial.
Compensation
Salary Range: $19.20-$25.72 per hour
Starting salary will be determined depending on relevant work experience.
