The Position

The City of Portland, Oregon, Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) is seeking a Community Outreach and Information Assistant to become part of a team providing public involvement, outreach, and information services to the Portland community regarding bureau projects, programs, and services. Responsibilities include drafting information for public outreach and communication materials; conducting field assessments and other research in order to develop an understanding of public issues relating to bureau activities; communicating with the public; and assisting with public events, such as open houses, advisory committee meetings, and public meetings. Additional responsibilities include working with representatives from other bureaus, neighborhood and business associations; and maintaining accurate records and files.
 
The Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) serves the Portland community by protecting public health, water quality and the environment. BES provides sewage and stormwater collection and treatment services, protects surface and ground water quality, and works for clean rivers and healthy watersheds.  The Bureau's vision is to be recognized as a trusted service provider and innovative environmental leader through a demonstrated commitment to clean rivers, healthy watersheds, and our community.  More than 500 highly skilled employees work collaboratively throughout the bureau for overall success.

 

To Qualify

 

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

  1. Knowledge of developing and implementing public involvement and communication plans that promote public awareness of and involvement in bureau projects, programs, and efforts.

  2. Ability to apply technical information and communicate it clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, in person, on-line, and in writing.

  3. Ability to interpret information and situations and make recommendations in accordance with applicable policies, regulations, and guidelines.

  4. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with representatives from other bureaus, community groups, the business community, and the media.

  5. Ability to operate a computer, especially using word processing, spreadsheets, and database management software.
