POSITION
DESCRIPTION: This position contributes to the mission of the organization by helping to facilitate a fun, educational and inclusive camp experience for all summer campers. The Summer Camp Counselor position is a temporary, non-exempt position reporting to the Camp Manager of Zenger Farm. The Camp Counselor will lead week-long day camps that focus on cooking, gardening, crafting, songs and games as well as wetland ecology, healthy food, natural history, compost, worms, and more. Camp themes and age groups vary but the Camp Counselor position will mostly work with K-1 and 2-3 grade camps. They will work with the Camp Manager to create outlines and activity plans for each camp week (full camp schedule can be found at www.zengerfarm.org/summer).The Camp Counselor will assist in the management of interns, volunteers and Teen Leaders and will oversee activity set-up and clean-up for each camp day. Possibility to co-lead larger camps with another counselor.
TIME COMMITMENT: Camp Training Week: June 12th -16th , 9am-3pm M-F (paid) 10 Weeks of Summer Camp between June 19 th and August 25 th (40 hours/week: 8am-4pm daily)
RESPONSIBILITIES Plan engaging curriculum and daily activities for campers to go with the camp theme each week. Facilitate camp activities daily with diverse campers ranging K-12th grade. Activities include cooking, gardening, crafts, songs, games and farm exploration. Manage the camp group safely and with inclusivity, kindness, patience and positive discipline. Lead volunteers, interns and Teen Leaders daily in camp logistics, including activity prep and clean-up. Interact with campers, families and volunteers in an enthusiastic and friendly manner. Maintain clear and open communication with Zenger Farm staff and volunteers. Maintain a safe and organized work environment for youth and adults.
QUALIFICATIONS A commitment to and passion for Zenger Farm’s mission. At least two years of experience teaching in outdoor education programs. Experience and comfort with group and behavior management. Excellent communication skills and enjoy working with both children and adults. Be positive, flexible, and self-directed. Complete a criminal background check. Be able to obtain Food Handlers Card, First Aid, CPR and Epi-pen certification (paid for by Zenger). BENEFITS/COMPENSATION This is a seasonal position with an hourly rate of $13.00-$14.00 an hour, depending on experience. Develop skills and experience teaching and facilitating outdoor education.
