Shadow a Recycling Information Specialist!
The Recycling Information Center (RIC) is a phone hotline that operates Monday-Friday answering approximately 150 calls, emails, and voicemails a day and over 37,00 total calls a year! The RIC answers calls in both English and Spanish from businesses and residents seeking information about recycling, reuse, repair, and more.
Using a custom-build database and years of experience, RIC staff refer members of our community to local facilities and business, while helping callers navigate our garbage and recycling systems. Shadowing the RIC is a great opportunity to hear what kinds of questions our community has about recycling and disposal. It is also a perfect way to spend time with an expert and get some of your own burning questions answered!
If you are interested in shadowing an RIC staff member, please review the details below and contact masterrecycler@oregonmetro.gov to sign up. Spots are limited to 8 and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. RIC staff will reach out directly to schedule a time that works best for both of you.
RIC Shadowing Details
Shadowing will take place in-person at the Metro Regional Center (600 NE Grand Ave, Portland)
Shadowing shifts are 1.5 hours long and can be scheduled Monday through Friday between 8:30am-5pm
You will sit in an open office setting or small huddle room with an RIC staff member to observe calls from the public. You will not be asked to speak on the phone or to respond to questions. This is observation-only!
Please indicate if you would prefer to shadow a Spanish speaking RIC staff member*
* We cannot guarantee that Spanish-speaking members of the community will call during your shadowing shift. Most of the calls we take are in English. However, the RIC staff member will be Spanish-speaking and can converse with you in Spanish.

El Centro de Información sobre Reciclaje (RIC por sus iniciales en Inglés) es una línea telefónica directa que opera de lunes a viernes y responde aproximadamente 150 llamadas, correos electrónicos y mensajes de voz al día y más de 37,00 llamadas en total al año. El RIC responde llamadas en inglés y español de empresas y residentes que buscan información sobre reciclaje, reutilización, reparación y más.
Utilizando una base de datos personalizada y años de experiencia, el personal de RIC refiere a los miembros de nuestra comunidad a instalaciones y negocios locales, mientras ayuda a las personas que llaman a navegar por nuestros sistemas de basura y reciclaje. Seguir al RIC en persona es una gran oportunidad para escuchar qué tipo de preguntas tiene nuestra comunidad sobre el reciclaje y la eliminación. ¡También es una manera perfecta de pasar tiempo con un experto y obtener respuestas a algunas de sus preguntas candentes!

Waste-Free Advocates Invites You to an Online Community
“You are needed in our online community! In my Master Recycler work as a volunteer board member for Waste-Free Advocates, I have established a community forum for all matters waste reduction that will be open to all Oregonians. The first members need to be waste reduction experts so that the room will already be full of folks with the RIGHT answers to the questions that will be asked by our larger community. This community will be especially helpful to have in full operation when the Recycling Modernization Act goes live in 2025.
Please take the time to join this group to be available to serve as a resource to your community to help our neighbors to waste less and recycle right!

Lia Becvar (Class 87)
Join me in celebrating Lia Becvar, Class 87, in officially reaching 30 volunteer hours and becoming a certified Master Recycler! Lia (in red), took the class through North by Northeast Community Health Center and has been active in a whole host of activities since. She attends monthly planning meetings at NxNE and with Master Recyclers of Color, participated in the 2023 Milwaukie Sustainability Fair, the Milwaukie Repair Fair, a James’s Recycling Event, and a Dumpster Day event. Thank you, Lia, for your commitment to making our world a better place!
Lia Becvar (Clase 87)
¡Únase a mí para celebrar a Lia Becvar, Clase 87, por oficialmente alcanzar 30 horas de voluntariado y convertirse en una Experta certificada en Reciclaje! Lia (en rojo), tomó la clase a través del Centro de Salud Comunitario North by Northeast (NxNE) y ha estado activa en una gran cantidad de actividades desde entonces.
