Hello Master Recyclers of greater Portland!
My name is Hans Kumler (pronounced Coom-lur) and I’m the program assistant for Metro’s Waste Prevention and Environmental Services Community Services & Education team (WPES-CSE). You may have received an email or two from me since the Master Recycler program transitioned from the City of Portland to Metro. Part of my job is to support Stacy and the Master Recycler program by handling many of the administrative needs that help keep things running smoothly. From maintaining our database of Master Recyclers to assembling class handbooks, I’m on it – just in the background!
I look forward to meeting Master Recyclers past and present in the coming months, as the program continues to settle in here at Metro. In the meantime, I thought I’d share a tiny bit about me.
I grew up in the Chicago area, in Oak Park, Illinois, the birthplace of Ernest Hemingway and longtime home to architect Frank Lloyd Wright. I knew from an early age that the Pacific Northwest was home for me and moved to Portland in 2019 after completing my graduate degree in Urban Planning and Environmental Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I met my partner, Grace, shortly after and we now live together in Cully with our dog Lenny. Outside of work, I spend my time cooking (99% of the time in hand-me-down cast iron pans which I delight in restoring), riding my bike around town, shooting hoops (or watching basketball – I LOVE basketball), or flipping coins to see if we should take a daytrip to the coast or the mountain.

Mi nombre es Hans Kumler (pronunciado Coom-lur) y soy el asistente del programa del equipo de Educación y Servicios Comunitarios de Servicios Ambientales y Prevención de Desechos de Metro (WPES-CSE). Es posible que haya recibido un correo electrónico o dos de mí desde que el programa Expertos en Reciclaje hizo la transición de la ciudad de Portland a Metro. Nineteen people participated in Class 85 and loved getting to know each other over the group activates. We toured Pioneer Recycling, Metro South, Recology Organics, the Canby ReStore, Oregon City Library of Things, and Free Geek. Thank you Clackamas County for hosting us, and I can’t wait to see you all in action.

Congratulations Class 86!
Class 86 welcomes eighteen new Expertos en Reciclaje as part of our forth, all Spanish-language class. We had a fantastic time together touring the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at Metro Central, Recology Organics, the Hillsboro Library of Things, and the Beaverton ReStore. We even welcomed Expertas en Reciclaje from past Centro Cultural classes to share their expertise. Thank you to Centro Cultural de Washington County for this incredible partnership.

David Milhouse (Class 76) (pictured on left) is now one of the special Master Recyclers who have reported over 500 hours! Mr. Milhouse took the class at North by Northeast Community Health Center and spent much of his hours on a partnership between Life Change Church and Mudbone Grown Farm. He provided an important connection between the food distribution from the black-owned farm to homebound seniors who cannot come to a food box event. This was a perfect role for Mr. Milhouse who is a pillar in the community and has a heart of gold. Thank you, Mr. Milhouse!!

Alaina Labak (Class 64) has also reached Quincenturion status with over 500 hours. Since the beginning, Alaina has been active with New Seasons Market green team and providing information to customers. She’s also on the board of Waste Free Advocates, and has participated at Portland’s Sunday Parkways, the Milwaukie Sustainability Fair, James’ Recycling Events, PlanetCon, and many other events. Thank you, Alaina!

Derwin Cunningham (left)
Derwin Cunningham (Class 76) (pictured on the left) has reached 100 hours! Derwin took the class at the North by Northeast Community Health Center and has been active with fellow classmates to hand out and deliver food boxes through the Life Change Church and Mudbone Grown Farm. He is also a key helper at Safe Homes, Healthy Homes events—a partnership of North by Northeast Community Health Center and Metro. Hosted right in the heart of Alberta Street, they offer recycling and toxics education, food boxes, toxics free sanitizer, collection of needles and medical waste and document shredding/recycling. Thank you, Derwin!

Elaine Milhouse
Elaine Milhouse (Class 76) has completed over 100 hours and is now a Centurion! She talked with folks from her church about decluttering using pill bottles, others in line at the store about sanitization using less toxic options, and neighbors about how to make masks from reused materials. She also participated in several COVID relief projects through Black churches and North by Northeast Community Health Center. They provided CSA food boxes, masks, and sanitizer along with information about food waste prevention and recycling. She is pictured here at one of their Safe Homes, Healthy Homes events. Well done, Elaine!

Cosette Lemos (Class 83) Congratulations to Cosette Lemos for reaching 100 hours! Cosette (far right in photo) is an AmeriCorps member with Confluence Environmental serving with Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling. She's volunteered on recycling at Orenco Sunday Market, Dia de Los Reyes, the Tualatin Repair Fair, and put in tons of hours planning the January PlanetCon event that was sadly cancelled last minute, and then the rescheduled event that happened in April. Thank you, Cosette, and congratulations!
Cosette Lemos (Clase 83) ¡Felicitaciones a Cosette Lemos por llegar a las 100 horas! Cosette (extremo derecho en la foto) es miembro de AmeriCorps con Confluence Environmental sirviendo con Residuos Sólidos y Reciclaje del Condado de Washington. Deborah is an active participant in the Master Recycler of Color group, participated in the Good in the Hood Parade, tabled on recycling at several events, and talked with people at her church about recycling. Way to go, Deborah!
