Volunteers with repair skills will be set up at a table and helping attendees fix their items. Volunteers without repair skills can help at the registration table, talk with attendees about how the event works and generally keep things flowing. Volunteers, if they choose, can also staff an information display on the topic of their choice - this often gives attendees something to do while their items are waiting on the hold table.
